Travel insurance for a cruise
Cruise lines cover some medical care aboard, but evacuation and missed-port expenses often fall to you.
EKTA
Published policy wording includes up to $1,500 per missed port, medical evacuation from ship to shore, and pre-paid excursion refunds when the ship reroutes. Terms specify coverage for helicopter rescue and repatriation, which most cruise lines exclude. No itinerary-change clause to match.

Standard travel insurance treats a cruise like any other trip. That works until you miss a port because of weather, need a helicopter to shore, or discover the ship’s doctor charges separately. Cruise-specific policies add missed-port compensation, cover the higher cost of medical evacuation at sea, and refund pre-paid shore excursions the ship skips.
Most major lines include basic medical care in your fare but exclude evacuation, repatriation, and treatment ashore. We compared standalone cruise policies against booking direct with your cruise line and doing without, using published terms and pricing checked in September 2026.

Frequently asked
Does my cruise fare include medical insurance?
Most cruise lines include basic medical consultation and treatment aboard the ship, but not evacuation, treatment ashore, or repatriation. The ship’s doctor charges separately for medications and some procedures. Check your ticket contract for the exact list.
What counts as a missed port?
A missed port is any scheduled stop the ship skips or cuts short because of weather, mechanical issues, port closures, or security concerns. Cruise-specific policies refund a pro-rated share of your fare for each missed stop. Standard travel insurance rarely covers this.
Is medical evacuation different at sea?
Yes. Helicopter rescue from a ship to shore, or transport to a hospital in the next port, costs thousands of dollars and is almost never included in your cruise fare. Cruise-specific policies list separate, higher limits for at-sea evacuation than for land-based transport.
