Best eSIM for Japan: Coverage, Data Tiers & Why We Compared Them
We compared the published Japan plans of four eSIM providers, plus one walk-up alternative, to see which suits a typical fortnight.
Airalo
Airalo’s Japan plans run on NTT Docomo, the country’s most extensive 4G/5G network. You can buy anything from 1 GB for a weekend to 20 GB for a month, and top up mid-trip without fuss. The app is plain but functional, and Docomo’s network reach extends from Hokkaido to Kyushu. Saily edges ahead on per-gigabyte value for heavy users, but Airalo’s flexibility and network reach make it the safer default for most visitors.

Frequently asked
Will my eSIM work on the shinkansen and in rural Japan?
Docomo-backed eSIMs hold signal best on bullet trains and in mountain valleys. SoftBank is solid on major routes but can drop in tunnels. Rakuten coverage is patchier once you leave big cities. All three networks blanket Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto comprehensively.
Can I keep my home number for calls and texts while using a Japan eSIM?
Yes. Install the Japan eSIM as a secondary profile and leave your primary SIM or eSIM active for voice and SMS. Set the Japan eSIM as your data line in Settings so you avoid roaming charges. WhatsApp, Signal and FaceTime will work normally over the Japanese data connection.
Is pocket wifi still worth renting in 2026?
Only if you are travelling as a group and want to share one connection across multiple devices, or if none of your phones support eSIM. Solo travellers and couples will find an eSIM cheaper, lighter and free of counter queues and return deadlines.

Japan’s mobile infrastructure is superb, but choosing the wrong eSIM can leave you hunting for wifi in Shibuya or rationing data on the shinkansen. The four providers we compared all piggyback on NTT Docomo, SoftBank or Rakuten, but their data allowances, validity periods and real-world reliability vary enough to matter.
We also checked whether pocket wifi rental—once the default for visitors—still justifies the counter queues and return hassle. Figures below were verified September 2026 and reflect typical pricing for a two-week trip.
